His killing in Canada’s Surrey follows that of Khalistan Commando Force chief Paramjit Singh Panjwar, alias Malik Sardar Singh, in Pakistan on May 6. Also in India’s terror list, Panjwar was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while he was out on a morning walk near his residence in Lahore. Panjwar (63) was designated as a terrorist by India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in July 2020.   Between April and May 2003, the Indian Army carried out Operation Sarp Vinash in the hilly heights of Poonch to liberate Hilkaka – a hamlet nestled high up in the mountains of Surankote tehsil — from militants who had established a parallel state on those heights. The operation marked a turning point against cross-border militancy in the area, and led to nearly two decades of peace in Poonch district and neighbouring Rajouri, both located along the Line of Control with Pakistan.
